Stealth Anti-Spam analyzes email during processing, to identify spam before it's delivered. Configuration options can allow end users to review their server-identified spam, or an automated server quarantine of spam can be used.

Pattern Matching

Pattern matching is a method of describing a message in terms of its content. The Spam Filter examines layout and organization, to identify the common characteristics of spam. Regular expressions provide the efficiency and speed required for real-time matches, and make it easy to add custom patterns.

An advanced pattern matching engine simultaneously applies thousands of algorithms during a single pass. The results determine a probability rating, and assign the appropriate action. Patterns are updated regularly to identify new tactics.

Spam Definitions

Spam definitions are patterns used to identify specific instances of spam. They detect multiple instances of material considered sufficiently similar to be the same message; for example, hoaxes and chain letters that may otherwise be difficult to detect. Spam definitions are updated regularly.

Real Time Blackhole List

The Real Time Blackhole List (RBL) is a compilation of networks that either allow spammers to use their systems to send spam, or have not taken action to prevent spammers from abusing their systems.

The Spam Filter checks the IP address of each machine sending email against the RBL. If a match is found, the incoming email is rejected.

Whitelists

A Whitelist is a list of IP addresses that allows pre-defined senders to pass unchecked. Administrators can configure the list to recognize mailing list traffic and opt-in marketing messages that may otherwise be misclassified.

Heuristic Analysis

Heuristic analysis uses a series of internal tests to determine the likelihood that a message is spam. Each test is weighted with a point value to reduce false positives. The total probability of spam is examined to determine an overall score, and a mapping function assigns the appropriate action. Actions include: rejecting, redirecting, logging, or annotating offending messages.

Stealth Spam Filter heuristics can be customized using the quarantine manager, which uses configurable thresholds for custom handling of mail that cannot be automatically identified ('gray mail').
