Tips on Getting Taken off Spam Lists

It is almost impossible these days to have a working Email that will not get listed on a SPAM List.  Once you are on one SPAM list, that address is often copied to other SPAM lists and on and on for years after the Email address is deactivated.  Since Spammers make their living by selling email addresses by the MILLIONS, there is no advantage for them to remove your address, even if you do not want to be listed.

Tip: Do NOT try to unsubscribe from any Email list that asks you to send them an Email response.  Most likely the Email address that they use is not valid and you would be wasting your time.  If they provide a hyperlink to a webpage, it is very likely a legitimate way to get unsubscribed.  Unfortunately, many people will actually get MORE SPAM once they unsubscribe, since your email is a confirmed active email which is more valuable.  The exception to this would be club or organization that is known to you that sends out announcements by Email using Yahoo groups or another such reputable service in which case it is safe to unsubscribe.

If your Email address is listed on a web page, Spammers will get your email using Email harvesters which scans webpages for Email Addresses.  This is especially true if you use "mailto" tags on your webpages.

Tip: If you want to display your Email Address on a web page, do not include it as text on the page, but instead, create a graphic with your Email address on it.  Email harvesters cannot detect words in graphics.

Tip: Instead of using mailto tags to generate Emails to you, use a custom Contact Form.  Make sure your Email address does not appear in any HTML source code or hidden fields.

Unfortunately, if you register your Email Address at some companies on the internet, they will resell your Email to marketing companies.

Tip: Get your own domain name.  It is cheap and you will never have to change your Email address, even if you switch internet access providers.  Most companies that offer email, have a "catch all" feature that allows non-matching email addresses at your domain to be delivered to you.  You could then give every company you provide your Email address to a different Email name.  If you start receiving SPAM, you can look at which email address they are using to determine who is sending the emails.  For instance, if you owned the domain johnbrown.com, you could sign up using johnscomputers@johnbrown.com at John's computers, freelotto@johnbrown.com at freelotto.com, msn@jjohnbrown.com at msn.com etc.  When you get an email from a travel agency to johnscomputers@johnbrown.com, saying "thank you for signing up for our newsletters", you could give John a call at his computer shop to let him know that he has been busted.

If you register a domain name, companies continuously check the whois database and use the Email addresses listed or try to guess at Email addresses at your domain such as webmaster@yournewdomain.com or info@yournewdomain.com.

Tip: Use a special Email address when you register domain names.  It is important that the registrar be able to reach you by Email for important updates such as "your domain is about to expire".
